IPL Match on Labour Day with BMC Sweeper Workers - May 2017

Cricket is the most-popular and most-watched sport in India. It is, in fact, quite akin to a religion. The passion, the palpable excitement and the thrill of the spectators is a joy to behold! With undoubtedly almost every Indian being a fan of the sport, it seemed prudent to make use of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament and have a few of the ardent Cricket-lovers from the MCGM’s Safai Karmachari to experience this thrill LIVE at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

In the spirit of showing appreciation for the BMC Safai Karmachari for their painstaking work, Divyaj Foundation arranged for IPL match tickets at the Wankhede Stadium on 1st May 2017. Accompanying these die-hard Cricket lovers from the Safai Karmachari were dignitaries like Mrs. Amruta Fadnavis – Advisor of the Divyaj Foundation, Mr. Sampath Iyer – Managing trustee, Mrs. Pallavi Shrivastava – Trustee, Mr. Kavin Shah – State Secretary, BJP, Dr. Mickey Mehta – Holistic Health Guru and Mrs. Rajalakshmi Iyer – Core member.

It was fitting that 1st May – the date for the match between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) – is also celebrated as Maharashtra Day or May Day / International Labour Day. It is an annual celebration in the honour of labourers and the working classes that takes place every year on May 1. It’s also known as ‘Antarrashtriya Shramik Diwas’ in Marathi or ‘Kamgar Din’ in Hindi.

This recreational activity for Safai Karmachari was thoroughly enjoyed by them especially since their home team, Mumbai Indians, ended up winning the match!
